Vision Evaluation for Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a medical device and will require a prescription from your eye doctor. Before prescribing contact lenses, Dr. Chan-Perez determines the level of vision correction you require and evaluates your overall eye structure and health. She will check:

• Your corneas, to measure their curvature and make sure they are healthy and intact with no underlying problems.

• Your tear film, to ensure you’re producing sufficient tears and that they are able to circulate properly while you have your contact lenses on.

• Your pupils, to help determine which type of lenses will work best for you, especially if you’re interested in gas-permeable contact lenses.

These baseline measurements ensure an accurate prescription and help us rule out any eye conditions or problems that may interfere with successful contact lens wear.

Who is an ideal candidate for contact lenses?

Almost anyone can comfortably wear contact lenses. They are ideal for patients who play sports and have an active lifestyle. However, the following may make contact lens wear inadvisable:

• Irregularities in your cornea

• Previous eye surgeries

• Certain eye diseases and conditions, such as dry eye, severe allergies, or frequent eye infections

• A dusty work environment

• An inability to handle and care for contact lenses

Basic contact lens options include soft and rigid gas-permeable lenses. How often you’ll need to change your lenses depends on the type you choose.
